The Significance of Safety and Sea Sickness Prevention
- As well as creating the illusion you are on board a 100-130ft superyacht with its comparative key usable spaces, EkoKat take the matters of safety and sea sickness extremely seriously. As one of our biggest hallmarks, we have abolished dangerous, presumed needed, legacy features altogether.
- Side-Decks to transit forward and aft of the yacht are completely unnecessary on a power catamaran (use the far safer and quicker front door in the middle of the salon lounge), not only reducing internal and flybridge floor space by 40% but they are a dangerous Hazzard especially when used underway.
- Owner and guest bedrooms located down in the hulls are the worst place to be to bring on sea sickness (60-70% of people suffer at some stage). Nobody sleeps down in the hulls on cruise ships or much larger megayachts. 3rd class passengers slept in the hulls on the Titanic. Hull bedrooms offer only one directional window views of the horizon, and when moving around bedrooms or corridors, in just the slightest of swaying water, this confuses and upsets our inner gyroscopes.
- As every yacht owner knows, the moment a guest becomes sea sick, the only option is to get them onto land and this often means the days yachting is over. For the sufferer there is almost nothing worse. Why take the risk.
- The starter-size super yachts and non tri-deck brands usually put the owners master suite on the main deck, but the guests are still all relegated to the hulls. Yachts brands will tell you it is because there is nowhere else to put them unless you go up to a minimum of a tri deck yacht.
- Furthermore these owners main deck full beam master cabins completely block the outside views forward from the lounge - views to the sides only on a $25 million yacht? EkoKat had the initiative to solve this annoyance by creating the world's 1st dual functioning penthouse lounge with electric raising soundproofed privacy walls, so offering spectacular 360° panoramic views for everyone in the day and 2-4 presidential suite bedrooms at night.
- ALL EkoKat bedrooms are at main deck level some 3-4 metres above the waterline with spectacular views across the ocean to the horizon. Far bigger rooms and far less chance of sea sickness.
- From a safety perspective all our main deck suites therefore offer instant and immediate outside access to the same level foredeck or cockpit. The poor owner, daughter and guests of the Bayesian superyacht tragic disaster did not have a chance asleep down in the hull in bed in Sicily in 2024.
- As well as the safety aspect, EkoKat's main deck suites are significantly larger, have far thicker and more soundproofed privacy walls, as well of course as spectacular outside views and direct access to step out into fresh air and the starry night sky.
- On the main deck we have the space for far larger and significantly more comfortable beds than the hulls – Large, luxury SleepKat sofas that innovatively conceal the best mattresses on the market (SleepKat’s are not fold out sofa beds). They have AI-Driven Mattress Temperature Regulation/cooling, Continuous Biometric Monitoring and an Analysis Smart Wake Feature with their mattress surrounding Eight Sleep system.

Conceived by people with actual practical yachting experience
- It is a known fact that most yachts are designed by desk-based marine or naval architects, usually with little or no actual experience at sea, owner-operating these category sized yachts. All competing with each other for the most compelling design features to out do each other and impress - in principal. In reality many of the theoretical features are highly impractical, for self satisfaction and in the wrong place, even dangerous. The battle of the architects who must not be questioned by others!
- However nothing beats actual experience and lots of it.
- EkoKat reversed the process. The founders biggest passion, whilst an entrepreneurial visionary, is motor yachting, with 3 decades and 10,000+ hours owner operator of 50-60ft yachts spanning 3 continents with different climatic and sea conditions/hazards. What one thinks might be a good idea, very often isn't, and it is not until out at sea with small children through to grandparent age guests and varying conditions this is discovered.
- Of course, marine architects and engineers at the factory are continually involved and deal with actual building plans and EU certification after completion - but are there to make sure what has been conceived and designed and passed to them actually works, or to make it work and is safe. This means buyers can be assured of buying a boat where everything makes sense and is in the right place, not a waste of space or time and money, and importantly at times when quick decisions need making. This method of yacht building is a rare commodity, one built around passion drive and knowledge through experience, and the importance of it cannot be under estimated.
